Calendar for Social Studies Assessment
November 5 -We were visited by the St. Augustine Kateri Warrior Dancers as well as an old friend, Fr. David Korth. They put on a wonderful show sponsored by the Durham Museum.
The 7th & 8th grade students preparing for Confirmation in November 2014 attended a special retreat called Underground Church at St. Roberts on Sunday afternoon Oct. 20. It was supposed to teach them how important their faith is and how many people have been persecuted for what we often take for granted. Five day school and PRE students were all invited.
Eighth Grade Social Studies:In 2013-2014 we will study US History. We will read a Revolutionary War novel called "Johnny Tremain" and a Civil War novel set in the plains states called "Rifles for Watie." Both of these novels have won numerous awards. Grades are now available on-line and I update my grades at least once a week. Check with the office for passwords, etc. In April we will study the first fifty years of the United States as well as the Holocaust.
Eighth Grade Religion:
We will study the Catholic religion, including feast days, the liturgy, the rosary, as well as the Old and New Testaments. We are studying the early Christian faith. We will be using the Catholic voice newspaper in class thanks to several organizations including the Knights of Columbus. Grades are now available on-line and I update my grades at least once a week. Check with the office for passwords, etc. The weeks of December we will cover Hanukkah, Advent, Christmas and Kwanzaa. In April we will study Lent and Holy Week as well as Easter.

Scholarship Information
8th grade students
have a lot on their plate. Among keeping up with their studies, they must
fill out applications to local Catholic High Schools and occasionally fill out
applications for scholarships. These applications often come with
requests for recommendations. If you are an 8th grade student, you must
do two things to get a recommendation from a teacher or counselor at
school. You must first fill out a form that Mrs. Moore has available in
the classroom. This form is also attached below. You must then take
that form and any other information to the person you are requesting a
recommendation. The 8th grade student must come personally to the teacher
so he/she may ask any follow-up questions about the scholarship or
school. This is excellent practice for high school, when students will
have to fill out applications to
college.
